Future visions play an important role in our lives. When we pursue a plan and a goal, we look to the future. In such situations, we try to connect our experiences and knowledge from the past and present with our decisions about the future. Often, we attempt to predict how the future environment will be and understand how our decisions will be influenced by it.This article systematically examines the literature of research that has utilized the “vision” method in futures studies. Its main objective is to analyze and identify the key dimensions related to the formulation of visions in organizations. The article addresses five key dimensions: 1) analyzing the current state of the organization, 2) assessing the external environment, 3) identifying the desired future vision, 4) connecting the future with the current state, and 5) evaluating the vision. Additionally, guidelines for formulating visions that have been presented in various articles are reviewed.
The results indicate that in domestic articles, the concept of “vision” has not been correctly related to the concept of futures studies, and therefore, only foreign articles have been analyzed in this study. This article explores various visioning methods and the challenges associated with uncertainties in external environments, emphasizing that combining logical analysis and intuitive thinking in vision formulation can help improve the quality of decision-making in organizations.
