The quality of religiosity has a close relationship with the economic, social, and cultural status of the middle class, and, in general, changes in religious orientations have a direct impact on the political power of the Islamic Revolution discourse and the ability of the political structure to mobilize this class. Considering the trends in religiosity among this class since the victory of the Revolution, this study—utilizing the methods of futures studies, the CLA theory, and scenario writing—explores the question: How do changes in religious orientations among Iran’s middle class affect the political capacity of the Islamic Revolution’s discourse in the future? Based on this question, the hypothesis is proposed that: ‘Shifts in religiosity among Iran’s middle class toward secularism and individualism have led to changes in the political discourse of the Islamic Republic.’
The results of this research, which have been analyzed using MICMAC software, indicate that social dissatisfaction and serious changes in the type of religiosity of the middle class—if not properly addressed by governmental institutions and through the implementation of fundamental reforms—can lead to political and social crises and intensify discontent. These findings underscore the urgent need to address the demands of the middle class and to optimally manage the transformations occurring in religious discourses.
