With the increase in international tensions, the analysis of Donald Trump's administration's policies towards Iran has become a central issue. Focusing on the analytical gap in previous studies that have mainly described superficial actions, this research seeks to provide a deeper analysis of the underlying layers of these policies by applying the theory of causal layered analysis. This study was conducted using a qualitative method and using the framework of causal layered analysis theory. Data and policy positions of the Trump administration towards Iran were collected and coded through direct study of official documents and speeches, including Trump’s speech on May 8, 2018 on withdrawing from the JCPOA, his statement on October 13, 2017 on decertification of the nuclear deal, and his statements on January 8, 2020 on preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and analyzed within the framework of the different layers of this theory. Data analysis shows that Trump’s policies towards Iran can be explained in four layers: in the layer of immediate causes, in the form of aggressive and sanctions-oriented actions; in the layer of systemic causes, with the decision to withdraw from the JCPOA and reimpose sanctions; in the layer of discourse and worldview, based on an anti-Iranian ideology; and in the layer of myth, as part of the narrative of the West’s confrontation with radical Islam. The findings confirm that a full explanation of Trump's policies is only possible by going beyond the superficial level and simultaneously examining deeper causal, discursive, and mythological layers. This comprehensive analysis provides a better understanding of behavioral patterns and underlying causes of these policies and can also be useful for predicting future behaviors.
