This study aims to investigate the role and function of home-based Rawzeh (religious mourning) gatherings in the future-oriented religious upbringing of Iranian families and to identify the challenges facing this religious tradition in the face of future transformations. Given the importance of home-based Rawzeh gatherings as a platform for transmitting religious values and strengthening religious identity in society, the study seeks to answer the following question: How can the educational and social role of home-based Rawzeh gatherings be preserved and strengthened for future generations while maintaining cultural authenticity and making use of modern innovations? To provide an in-depth analysis of the factors affecting the function of these gatherings, Causal Layered Analysis (CLA) was employed. Relevant documents and records were reviewed, and interviews were conducted with experts, leading to the development of five plausible scenarios for the future of home-based Rawzeh gatherings. The findings were organized across the four CLA layers. At the first layer, factors such as declining participation and economic challenges were identified. At the second layer, changes in family structure, the growing role of technology, and shifts in economic priorities were examined. At the third layer, traditional, modern, educational, social, and economic discourses surrounding home-based Rawzeh gatherings were analyzed. At the fourth layer, deep-seated beliefs such as “change is a sign of progress,” “the home is a personal enclosure,” and “work is more valuable than spirituality” were identified as factors contributing to the declining importance of these gatherings. Finally, the study offers practical recommendations for integrating modern innovations while preserving cultural authenticity and emphasizes that home-based Rawzeh gatherings can continue to play an effective role as an institution for the religious and social upbringing of future generations.
