Objective: The aim of this research is to uncover the conceptual framework of oppositional media activism in the political-security spheres on social media, with a focus on events in 2019. The main question is to explore the conceptual model and the thematic areas emphasized by these media activists.
Method: This is a qualitative research study. Data collection was done using document analysis, and data were analyzed through thematic analysis using the Wolcott method with MaxQDA software.
After segmenting, refining, and categorizing selected news propositions from websites, Instagram, Telegram, and Twitter, each proposition was labeled descriptively according to its context. Through higher levels of abstraction in subsequent layers of coding, 21 analytical themes (mid-level) in the political-security domain were identified, resulting in 6 interpretive (macro) themes. Ultimately, a thematic network was drawn, described, and analyzed based on the extracted data.
Findings: The outcome of the media activism and its focal point in content creation by oppositional media activists portrays contemporary Iran with the characteristics of Iranian misery, insecurity across all sectors, and an inefficient and corrupt government.
To theorize national despair and sorrow, these activists place these themes as the core content of their media confrontation, with other themes and subcategories structured and emphasized around these central ideas in a media framework. Accordingly, the three main facets of the conceptual core "insecure Iran" are the misery of the Iranian people, government corruption and inefficiency, and the collapse of Iran's social systems (including political, economic, and cultural collapse).
