Energy security, as a key element of countries’ sustainable development, has increasingly attracted the attention of global policymaking institutions as well as research and academic centers. The aim of this article is to trace and examine energy-security trends in order to identify the factors influencing them. To achieve this goal, a study with an emphasis on scientific mapping and performance analysis was conducted. Subsequently, the most relevant factors affecting energy security are investigated, and a comprehensive qualitative analysis is carried out using the capabilities of the VOSviewer software. Surprisingly, the results indicate that there was no significant increase in the number of studies on energy security in the early years of the examined period. The average number of publications between 2014 and 2023 was 489, yet this figure rose sharply to 1,073 in 2023, underscoring the sudden surge of scholarly interest in the field of energy-security studies. Moreover, the network of research collaborations in energy security reveals a substantial number of international partnerships, including joint research activities with various research institutions. In addition to presenting targeted information on energy-security research trends, this article serves as a strategic roadmap for future researchers, helping them to position their work within the emerging and continuously evolving domains of energy security.
