Influence is one of the most effective means of inflicting indirect harm by adversaries, capable of causing irreparable damage to the opposing side with minimal cost if successful. The physical and tangible aspect of influence refers to the infiltration of an agent into the rival's camp or the penetration of intelligence, political, or cultural forces into the adversary's domain. In contrast, soft influence focuses on non-physical, mental, and intangible dimensions. This concept targets the attitudes, beliefs, emotions, expectations, and preferences of the target society. Soft influence can therefore be defined as subtly shaping and affecting the behavior, thoughts, ideals, preferences, desires, and identity of others to achieve desirable outcomes without direct confrontation. Cognitive influence, a subset of influence and one of its most subtle and effective forms, involves inducing an individual to act according to the influencer's desires without the person realizing they have been persuaded. Futures studies serve as a powerful tool to counter cognitive influence by tracking, issuing warnings, and forecasting scenarios to neutralize cognitive influence and its consequences within decision-makers and society. It addresses this challenge across three domains—perceptual, attitudinal, and intellectual—by fortifying internal resilience. This research adopts a descriptive-analytical method, examining the characteristics of cognitive influence and the role of futures studies in mitigating its impact.
