The issue of corruption in societies is a complex and multifaceted challenge, requiring an understanding of its roots and various layers to develop effective countermeasures for each aspect. This exploratory qualitative study is based on Letter 53 of Nahj al-Balagha (the Covenant of Malik al-Ashtar) with a futures studies approach, aiming to uncover the layers of corruption using the method of layered analysis to envision the future of combating corruption. In this regard, 15 key themes explicitly or implicitly related to corruption were selected from the text of Imam Ali's statements and analyzed at four levels: objective/formal, objective/deep, subjective/formal, and subjective/deep. The findings indicate that manifestations of corruption can be evaluated across these four levels, where what appears at the objective/formal level is rooted in the objective/deep level. Its necessity or prohibition is articulated at the subjective/formal level, and its underlying causes are addressed at the subjective/deep level. The envisioned future presented by this study regarding the layers of corruption offers a hopeful, feasible, and probable outlook for all societies, enabling them to take appropriate actions to achieve the benefits of combating corruption or preventing its consequences. This is because many societal corruptions share similar roots, and their countermeasures have been tested.
