The relationship between media and civilization can be explored on two levels. On the first level, civilization and civilizational concepts are perceived as messages represented through the medium of media. The civilizational position (dominant or subordinate) and the affiliation or lack thereof of media technology with civilizational origins are the key factors influencing how such civilizational concepts are represented. On the second level, the relationship between media as technology and a civilizational product with native and non-native civilizations and cultures is studied. This analysis is inspired by four prominent theories regarding the nature of technology: instrumentalism, determinism, essentialism, and contextualism. These theories primarily investigate the directional or non-directional nature of technology in general and media technology in particular. Among these perspectives, while essentialism offers a precise explanation of technology and its manifestation, contextualism, by distinguishing between intrinsic and extrinsic contextualities of technology in general and media technology in particular, considers the relationship between technology and culture or civilization to be flexible.
